Once disaster thresholds of a given plot of land are defined, Desidera automatically ingests local weather forecasts to scan for those thresholds. When conditions are expected to trigger disasters, Desidera sends out automated early warnings.
As GreenAnt's development roadmap expands Desidera's thresholding capabilities to wildfire, blight, and other climate risk categories, the scope of what anticipatory action can accomplish will grow with it.
Spotlight: Rainfall-to-Flood Thresholds
Rainfall-to-flood thresholds, or RFTs, are Desidera’s flood thresholds that identify the aggregate millimeter-level of rainfall across an entire hydrological basin that will likely trigger flooding across a precise plot of land. RFTs are derived from the specific geophysical characteristics of that land, including the soil drainage patterns, elevation, nearby river systems, and beyond.
Traditional flood risk assessments often rely on historical weather patterns to extrapolate future predictions. As climate change intensifies, however, historical weather patterns grow more and more obsolete. In turn, traditional risk analysis becomes less and less accurate, leaving communities and businesses increasingly vulnerable. Faced with mounting risk, insurance premiums skyrocket. Geopolitical shifts and donor hesitancy make climate-focused humanitarian interventions more difficult and more costly.
Desidera’s RFTs offer a new approach, shifting the risk analysis benchmark from historical patterns to real-time, hyper-local conditions. These thresholds empower stakeholders to anticipate flooding with greater precision and confidence, regardless of the impacts of climate change.
